Report: former AU coach Gene Chizik could step away from coaching
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. —
North Carolina defensive coordinator Gene Chizik may be headed back to the TV booth.
Chizik has been on the Tar Heels staff the past two seasons but sources tell FootballScoop.com that the former Auburn head coach is considering stepping back from coaching, with a move into TV a strong possiblility.
That could be the reason behind North Carolina's interest in former North Texas defensive coordinator Mike Ekeler, who reportedly interviewed for a spot on the Tar Heels staff, although there is not currently an open assistant position.
Chizik spent four seasons as Auburn's head coach, leading the Tigers to the BCS National Championship in 2010. He was fired after in 2012 and spent two years out of football, working for Sirius/XM radio and other broadcast spots.
Chizik had success coming back to the coaching sideline. The past two seasons, North Carolina's defense has allowed less than 25 points a game.
