Woodlawn football looks to "Rebuild the Castle"

If you were active on social media on Monday, you might have spotted #RebuildTheCastle.

That comes courtesy of the Woodlawn High School and it's new football coach George Bates, who says the front of the school looks "like a castle".

The Colonels began summer workouts this week, trying to restore respectability. The football program has had just two winning seasons the past 22 years.

Bates wasn't even planning on coaching this season after being dismissed by Minor High School in December, but it's hard to pass up the kind of history the school offers.

"I'm a city guy through and through, I love Birmingham," Bates said. "I actually went to Woodlawn for a brief stint. My pastor was the principle at the time, so I have a sense of pride. So I know academically and athletically what this school is about. "
