Birmingham Barons ready for 2017 season
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The Birmingham Barons are ready to get down to the business of baseball.
Players and coaches arrived in Birmingham on Saturday and held the first workout at Region Field on Sunday.
One of the rosters main attractions is pitcher Michael Kopech. He was acquired from the Boston Red Sox when the Barons big league club, the Chicago White Sox traded Chris Sale last summer.
Kopech, who is just 20 years old, threw a fastball that was clocked at 105 mph on the radar gun last summer while pitching for Single-A Salem.
"Obviously (Regions Field) is one of the nicest stadiums in minor league baseball so thats kind of exciting on its own," Kopech said. "It'll be a good atmosphere and crowd and I can pitch in front of them. I'm excited to be here in general though, being a young guy in Double-A, you know I'm eager to show what I can do."
The Barons season opener is at Jackson, Tenn. on Thursday. The home opener is April 12 against Montgomery.
