UAB football scrimmage: Gold cruises to 33-10 win over Green
In front of 4,700 fans at BBVA Compass Field, Team Gold defeated Team Green 33-10 on Monday night.
Gold was led by quarterback A.J. Erdely who finished the game 17-of-31 for 253 yards and a touchdown, along with 10 carries for 44 yards and a rushing TD.
Running back Kalin Heath added 74 yards on five carries for Gold (14.8 YPC), while Omar Williams chipped in 73 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
"I think today was a culmination of a great day," head coach Bill Clark said. "Obviously any time we can get at each other like that and come out of there with little or no injuries is really good. I think one of the things for us is how would we respond after three weeks of practice and getting to get in front of the home fans. We had a terrific turnout. I think that was part of the process tonight - getting the guys back out there and playing a real game."
Gold took a 3-0 lead on a 30-yard field goal from Nick Vogel at the 11:51 mark of the opening quarter. Darez Diggs' interception on Green's opening drive gave the ball back to Gold. Erdely then connected with John Nixon for a 27-yard strike to give Gold a 10-0 lead with 8:51 to go in the first.
Williams added to Gold's lead early in the second quarter when he broke loose for a 29-yard touchdown, making the score 16-0. The two teams then traded field goals and entered the locker room with Gold leading 19-3.
Gold extended its lead to 33-3 in the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Michael Turner to Chase Long, and a 30-yard touchdown run from Erdely, to take a commanding lead into the fourth.
Green quarterback John Jacobs provided the only touchdown of the fourth quarter on a 9-yard rush, which resulted in the final score of 33-10.
Defensively, Safety Jordan Petty had two interceptions for Gold, both of which came in the end zone to halt scoring threats for Green. Irving Adams paced the Gold defense with nine tackles, while Quindarius Thagard and Darryl Waters added seven apiece.
"I thought the crowd was great," Clark said. "We had great student participation - I don't know where else we could have put them. I appreciate our soccer folks letting us get out there and share their venue. We had this great morning - it has just been a fantastic day."
Monday's Green and Gold Game concludes the Blazers' 2016 fall camp. UAB will hold another scrimmage in late October.
