UAB scores commit from state's all time leading tackler

Spanish Fort's Thomas Johnston is joining the UAB family.

The four-star linebacker committed to the Blazers Tuesday morning, picking UAB over SEC schools Auburn, Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Johnston finished third in the race for Alabama's Mr. Football award. His brother, current UAB quarterback Tyler Johnston, won the Mr. Football award last year.

The 6-foot-2, 230 pound linebacker is rated as the No. 8 overall player in the state according to Johnston made 195 tackles as a senior at Spanish Fort High School, which gives him 675 tackles duing his prep career--the most in AHSAA history.

Johnston was named MVP of last month's Alabama-Mississippi All Star game in Montgomery after finishing with a game-high 16 tackles.

Johnston is the third in-state prospect to commit to UAB on Tuesday, joining Vestavia Hill's Patrick Nuss and Parker's Eugene Minter.
