DeMeco Ryans appears ready to begin his second NFL career--as a coach.

Ryans will be part of Kyle Shanahan's coaching staff with the San Francisco 49ers, as a defensive quality control coach.

Ryans connection with Shanahan goes back to his time as a player with the Houston Texans. He spent six seasons with Houston (2006-11) and Shanahan was on the coaching staff for four of those same seasons (2006-09).

New 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was also on the Texans coaching staff from 2005-10.

Ryans, who attended Jess Lanier High School and the University of Alabama, spent 10 seasons in the NFL with the Houston and Philadelphia. His last season was 2015.

He finished his career with 970 tackles, 13.5 sacks, seven interceptions and seven forced fumbles.

He was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006.
