Mae Jemison's Petty wins Mr. Basketball honor
MONTGOMERY, Ala. —
The Alabama basketball program had a big day at the Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Year Banquet.
Tide commit John Petty, a senior guard at Mae Jemison High School, won the Alabama Mr. Basketball award for the second consecutive year.
Brewbaker Tech's Bianca Jackson won the Alabama Miss Basketball award.
In addition to Petty, two other Alabama basketball commits won player of the year honors. Pelham's Alex Reese is the Class 6A boys Player of the Year and Hale County's Herb Jones is the Class 4A boys Player of the Year.
"Like you said, it just ups the excitement that we have for coming in next year," Reese said. "Being able to play with the guys that are returning and the guys that are coming in. We're just all excited."
"When I decided my Top 5, that was one of the things that I wanted to do--was to bring the basketball culture back to Alabama," Jones said. "Not letting the University of Alabama be just a football school. And show the kids that are around, that you can stay at Alabama and make it a basketball school"
