A "Drag & Donuts" event at Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, will no longer take place after parents and concerned citizens found out about it and raised issue over the event's appropriateness.
Organized by the school's Queer and Ally Alliance, the "Drag & Donuts" event, which has already taken place for two consecutive years, was expected to occur Thursday.
However, the event was cancelled after the Florida Department of Education reached out to the school and questioned whether the event was age and developmentally appropriate, according to a voicemail message sent to parents by Boone High School Principal Hector Maestre.
The Florida Department of Education added in its message to the school that any administrator, teacher or staff member who attempts to hold the event anyways, may be investigated and could jeopardize their teaching license.
"QAA is excited to announce our annual Drag and Donuts event with @mommaashleyrose! Hope to see you all this Thursday in the Media Center," an Instagram post from the school's Queer and Ally Alliance stated alongside an image of a flyer promoting the event.
Maestre insisted during his voice message to parents that the event "was not a drag show," but rather "an opportunity for students to hear a positive message of acceptance and love."
However, Orange County Public Schools board member Alicia Farrant seemed to disagree with the event's appropriateness, calling out the event Wednesday and telling her followers on social media that she was investigating further.
"We need to be RAISING the standard of excellence in our schools and helping students excel academically, not inviting drag queens in to eat donuts with our children," Farrant argued.
According to The Orlando Sentinel, the drag performer invited to Boone High School, an individual named Jason DeShazo who performs as "Momma Ashley Rose," recently spoke out against a Florida bill seeking to limit drag sows in the presence of minors.
During his comments, DeShazo reportedly echoed what Principal Maestre told parents, that his upcoming event was not a drag show.
