Birmingham leaders meeting about upcoming legislative session

The Birmingham City Council will meet with the Jefferson County Delegation to discuss possible legislation for this upcoming session. The annual meeting will take place at the Birmingham Crossplex Tuesday afternoon.Top issues on the agenda include economic development and UAB.

Birmingham would like to see lawmakers pass incentives to make the state's largest city more competitive in the Southeast.{}

"Our constituents put their faith in our work as we push to develop partnerships with key decision-makers that oversee programs created to improve their communities," said Council President Johnathan Austin in a statement.

City leaders also want to ensure UAB is governed fairly. They either want members of the Jefferson County Delegation to sponsor legislation to give UAB and UAH its own boards of trustees or change the UA Board of Trustees to include alumni from UAB, UAB and UA.

Representative Jack Williams, (R) Vestavia Hills, has already announced that he would sponsor a UAB bill. Other bills are also expected to be introduced in the session.

The meeting starts at 2 p.m..

The Alabama Legislative Session begins in March.
