UPDATE: Suspect, employee shot during attempted robbery at Ensley KFC

    A man accused of opening fire in an Ensley KFC is in the hospital. Police say he and a restaurant employee exchanged gunfire during an attempted robbery. Both were shot.

    Birmingham police have not released the suspect's name. But they say he went into the restaurant on the 18 hundred block of 20th Street Ensley around 6:30 p.m. Sunday to rob it and started shooting. An armed employee fired back. Both the employee and the suspect were shot.

    Police say the employee was hit in the lower body. Those injuries are not life threatening.

    The suspect was shot in the stomach. Police say he is undergoing surgery.{}
