Police drones take to the skies saving time and money in search and rescue operations

Vestavia Hills Police Department supported search efforts for a missing Chelsea woman over the weekend with their night vision drone. Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club paid for the equipment.

As more law enforcement agencies purchase drones, our i-Team looked into the costs and benefits. In many instances they are safer than flying a helicopter. They are also much cheaper. Drones can be purchased for under a $1,000 while a used helicopter can cost over a million dollars plus the trained personnel to fly it.

Some agencies though expressed concern about confusion over the rules and regulations surrounding drones. A state task force put together during former Governor Bentley's term failed to come up with guidelines for Alabama. For now, only general federal rules apply.
