Update: Parrish Mayor Heather Hall tells ABC 33/40 that John Softley was a member of the Parrish Town Council and a Jasper police officer. He joined the council in January 2017.

Hall said Softley was very active in his district and the community at large. Hall said Softley brought a calming presence into the room.

"You just felt like you could rely on him," Mayor Hall said. "He was one of my sounding blocks. He was just a really great guy. He was truly a great guy."

Hall went on to add that the all affected in Saturday's incident are in the town's thoughts and prayers.

"It is just heartbreaking," Mayor Hall said. "It is a loss. I think with the rest of Walker County, this affects more than just Parrish. We are in shock. We are just trying to wrap our minds around what happened. The John Softley I knew would help anybody in need, was a very strong and charismatic individual. He loved his community, he loved his family, and he will be missed."
