Body of father, 3-year-old child recovered after kayak flips on Tallapoosa River

UPDATE (2:02 p.m.):

State troopers have identified the father and son killed after their kayak flipped over on the Tallapoosa River.

Jason Smith, 34, of Heflin, and his 3-year-old son, who were not wearing life vests, were recovered from the river. Smith's 4-year-old son was not injured.

Nothing further is available as law enforcement continue to investigate.


The body of a 35-year-old father and a 3-year-old child have been recovered after their kayak flipped on the Tallapoosa River.

The Cleburne County Coroner says a call came in around 4:30 p.m. Sunday that a father and two children, ages 3 and 4, were on a kayak when in flipped on the river. A 12-year-old, who was in a separate kayak, rescued the 4-year-old.

Clay County and Randolph County water rescue assisted in the recovery efforts for the 3-year-old.

The coroner is not identifying the deceased at this time, but the family has been notified.
