HOMEWOOD, Ala. — An armed carjacker wrecked three times and totaled four cars during a police chase through Birmingham and Homewood on Thursday afternoon, police confirm.
Around 3 p.m. Homewood Police officers learned of a carjacking at the intersection of Oxmoor Road and St. Charles Street in Edgewood. Officers were told an armed carjacker robbed a woman of her red corvette. A police chase began after officers noticed the car on Valley Avenue. Officers pursued the suspect, who wrecked on I-65 at the University Boulevard exit before a second wreck on 3rd Avenue North and 17th Street North. The driver continued onward down 3rd Avenue and wrecked for a final time at Carraway Boulevard. The final crash rendered the car useless. All four tires were flattened and nothing was left attached to the back passenger sides except one rim.
The brazen suspect abandoned the vehicle and took off running into nearby Kudzu grass. He didn't get far, because Homewood Police officers had established a perimeter around the scene. Officers were able to handcuff the suspect without a struggle. He currently faces a first degree robbery charge and will likely also face hit-and-run charges.
Neither the suspect nor those involved in the multiple wrecks were injured. Four cars were totaled during the chase.
Both Birmingham Police and Homewood Police officers responded to the multiple scenes.
