BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — According to Birmingham Fire-Rescue, power was out for a significant part of the north side of downtown due to an electrical fire around 3 p.m. today.
Traffic lights in the area were also out for the entire affected area.
According to officials with the city of Birmingham, power was turned off for safety reasons after an underground electrical fire.
The electricity remained off through the afternoon rush hour today, causing extreme traffic congestion in the downtown area.
The affected areas included:
North/South: 1st Avenue South to 9th Avenue North.
East/West: 18th Street to Richard Arrington Blvd. North.
Around 7 p.m. Alabama Power restored all power to downtown Birmingham.
