A family of three in Ensley woke up Wednesday to firefighters rushing to evacuate them from their home.. "The family was in very immediate danger," said Birmingham Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Raymond Williams.

The danger became apparent around 4:30 a.m. when firefighters were called to a two-story house fire on the 1800 block of 29th Street Ensley. The house was found to be abandoned but crews soon recognized the home next door (and the family inside) were in danger. The family was unharmed after being rushed outside. Firefighters were able to put out most of the flames within an hour.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown but Williams says it very suspicious. Just two houses away stood the foundation of another abandoned house which firefighters said was destroyed in a fire within the last year.
