Birmingham's murder rate outpaces Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit

Birmingham's homicide rate outpaces the majority of other American cities, including Chicago, Washington D.C., and Detroit, according to the FBI's 2019 Crime in the United States data, as well as data directly from city police officials and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Birmingham was number three for homicides in the US during 2019 with 50.56 murders out of every 100,000 residents.

  • That’s a higher murder rate than Chicago (18.26 murders out of every 100K residents)
  • Higher than Montgomery, Ala (18.54 murders out of every 100K residents)
  • Higher than Tuscaloosa, Ala (20.77 murders out of every 100K residents)
  • Higher than Washington DC (23.52 murders out of every 100K residents)
  • Higher than Atlanta (19.53 murders out of every 100K residents)
  • Higher than New Orleans (30.67 murders out of every 100K residents)
  • Higher than Detroit (41.45 murders out of every 100K residents

St. Louis and Baltimore come in at numbers 1 and 2 in the nation for homicides, respectively.

43 homicides have been reported in Birmingham as of May 18, 2021.

At this point in 2020, 44 homicides had been reported. Birmingham had 122 total homicides in 2020 - the most in 25 years.
