Child abuse allegations made against Interim Birmingham Police Chief prior to departure

A request for protection from abuse order was filed against former Birmingham interim police chief Orlando Wilson prior to his departure.

The order, filed on April 11, alleges a sexual incident and a separate physical incident with a girl and boy. The incidents reportedly happened in September of 2017 and December of 2013.

Wilson came out of retirement to serve as interim chief following Chief A.C. Roper's retirement.

On Wednesday, the Mayor's Office announced that Wilson was leaving as interim chief due to a medical procedure.

Day-to-day operations are being handled by Deputy Chief Henry Irby.

An attorney for Orlando Wilson released the following statement:

Orlando Wilson’s transition comes because he requires medical attention and has been scheduled for surgery tomorrow.
He has needed this surgery for some time now , but he post-poned the surgery to serve the people of Birmingham as the interim police chief while the national search was being conducted.
The transition has nothing to do with a petition for protection from abuse containing false allegations of abuse that he had no knowledge existed.
These source of the false and defamatory allegations is Daphne McCall and comes as the result of an ongoing long time battle for custody and child support between Orlando Wilson and Daphne McCall.
Daphne McCall has a personal vendetta against him.
There has been history of false allegations not rooted in fact from this woman.
The allegations of abuse come only after Orlando Wilson was appointed as the interim Chief of Police for the City of Birmingham.
