A construction worker was killed and another person was injured on Interstate 59 North near Attalla Thursday, ABC 33/40 has learned. The two were hit by a driver as they were finishing work for the evening.

Alabama State Troopers say the worker was killed just before 5 p.m. near mile marker 178. The crash shut down all northbound lanes of the interstate for nearly three hours, but the road has since been reopened.

The identity of the victim who died is being withheld pending notification of family.

The condition of the second victim is unknown at this time. He was airlifted to a local hospital from the scene.

That portion of the interstate has recently been resurfaced. There was still some additional work being done.

State troopers say it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash. They warn drivers to pay close attention in construction zones. Speed limits are clearly marked.
