ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. — Etowah County locals and leaders welcomed in a new sheriff.
Jonathon Horton was sworn into office outside the Etowah County Sheriff's Office on Monday. Hundreds packed the parking lot outside of the Sheriff's Office for the ceremony.
Sheriff Horton says part of his plan is to find help for criminals with mental health issues.
"Not only get people in jail and get them off of their substances but to give them GEDs and diplomas and teach them trades," Sheriff Horton said, "and to bring in unemployment services and give them the availability to, you know, not only stay off drugs but to find something else to do with their time."
Sheriff Horton has about 18 years of law enforcement experience, including time spent as Chief of Police for the Rainbow City Police Department.
