Florida evacuees seeking safety in Central Alabama

As hurricane Michael inches closer to the Florida Panhandle evacuees fleeing the state have made their way to our area.

Several hotels in the Central Alabama area say they have already had evacuees checking in. Some hotels reported no vacancies for most of the week.

Jared and Michelle Schnader from Santa Rosa Beach were forced to leave under a mandatory evacuation.

They packed up Tuesday morning and will stay with family in the Alabaster area as the storm passes.

They tell us they did not want to risk staying.

"We have three kids and you know everybody's brave until they realize how big God is and he's coming in," Jared said. "So you just step away and you get out as fast as you can."

Hotels in the area with space for guests reported a small number of vacancies
