HOOVER, Ala. —
Update (12/11): The suspect in the armed carjacking at the Riverchase Galleria on Dec. 6 was arrested after committing another armed robbery in Jefferson County on Saturday, Hoover Police officers confirm. Albert Ward III, 33, has been booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
Original: An armed robber is on the run after stealing a car Thursday morning at the Riverchase Galleria, Hoover Police confirm.
A woman reported to Birmingham Police that her car had been stolen while she was inside a convenience store on 4th Avenue in Birmingham. Having left her phone in the car, she was able to track the car's movement through a phone app. A family member brought her another car. She eventually pulled up beside her stolen car, which was stopped in traffic in the 1500 block of Montgomery Highway. She then fired two shots as the carjacker pulled away, officer say.
Thirteen minutes after the woman filed a report at Hoover City Hall, Hoover Police received reports of an armed robbery at the Riverchase Galleria's North Parking deck. A shopper told Hoover Police she was exiting her SUV when an armed man approached her, demanding her keys. She complied. The suspect abandoned the original stolen car in the JC Penney parking lot and fled in her car, a black 2013 Nissan Pathfinder with the Alabama tag 1BC1345.
The stolen Pathfinder was spotted in the Atlanta area, but has not yet been recovered, detectives say.
The suspect is described as being between five foot five and five foot nine inches tall. He was wearing a tan jacket with a grey hood, which can be seen in the attached surveillance photo.
Anyone with information on the suspect's identity is urged to contact Detective Drew Mims at (205) 739-7274. Anonymous information may be reported to Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777 for a possible cash reward.
