Hurricane Harvey: Alabama’s largest church already helping in Texas

A church in the ARC helps after Harvey in Texas.

Alabama's largest church is already on the ground in Texas in response to Harvey.

Church of the Highlands Pastor Dino Rizzo left for Texas to work on the plan to help.

Rizzo is also in contact with churches that Highlands planted in the Houston area. Church of the Highlands is directly connected to at least 20 churches there through its organization ARC, or the Association of Related Churches.

Pastor Layne Schranz says Highlands is working to help these churches help their own community.

“We’ve been able to send resources and currently we are sending very small teams over to do some recon work with those churches, get on the ground there,” explained Schranz.

As Highlands assesses needs, it will be sending more teams from Alabama. Schranz says that preparation is starting this week.

“Everyone of us at Church of the Highlands feels the responsibility to pray, to give and to go,” said Schranz. “So we don’t want to sit back and feel we’ve done something because we said a prayer or we even gave money toward helping someone. We actually want to go.”

If you can help, Schranz encourages donations to ARC, which can be made on

“If you donate to ARC, the Association of Related Churches, everything, 100 percent of what you give will be given to the local churches in the affected areas from the hurricane and then we know that every dollar is going to be touching people in those communities,” said Schranz. “None of that money will be going to any overhead. It will go directly through the local church in those communities to touch people.”

As for those looking to go help in Texas, Schranz says that information will be posted on the Church of the Highlands website later this week.
