Jefferson County teen dies after suffering severe burns

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

A Western Jefferson County teenager died on Thursday after being severely burned on January 14.

The sheriff's office said on January 14, the victim and two other teenagers were trying to light a type of paper near deck to a home on Snowville-Brent Road. When the paper did not burn fast enough, the victim grabbed a five gallon can of gas and dumped it on the small fire. The gas exploded, catching the victim on fire.

The victim was taken to the hospital, and on January 18, a social worker at the hospital told the sheriff's office that the victim would be taken off of life support.

Foul play is not being suspected in the teen's death.

The sheriff's office offered their thoughts and prayers to the family.
