The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) found a loaded gun at a Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport checkpoint Tuesday morning.

A loaded Smith and Wesson .380 caliber pistol was discovered in a passenger’s carry-on bag at around 5:00 a.m.

Airport police escorted the passenger away from the checkpoint area and took possession of the bag.

Firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags, but can be transported in checked baggage if they are in a proper carrying case, are unloaded, and are declared to the airline.

“Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the checkpoint. Our advice is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.” -- Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson

This is the 31st firearm discovered at security checkpoints by TSA officers at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport so far in 2017. A total of 45 were found there in 2016.
