Police searching for suspect after Birmingham PD patrol unit stolen

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) - Police say a suspect stole a patrol unit and led officers on a chase before abandoning the vehicle.

The incident started when an officer attempted to stop a suspect for speeding on Pike Road before noon. When the suspect refused to stop a chase began.

The chase ended when the suspect eventually exited the car and started to run on foot. Police say the suspect then circled back, stole a patrol car and took off. A second car chase then led police to Jerry D. Coleman Community Center in Fairfield where the patrol unit was abandoned.

Police now have a K-9 unit on scene and are searching for the suspect.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is made available.
