There is a new sheriff in Jefferson County.

Mark Pettway defeated incumbent Mike Hale, who held the position since 1998 and was biding for his sixth term.

Pettway is Jefferson County's first African American sheriff-elect. He's a detective sergeant at the sheriff's office and has served in law enforcement for over 27 years.
