Urban Meyer announces retirement after Rose Bowl, Ryan Day named next head coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) - Ohio State coach Urban Meyer will retire after the Rose Bowl, per team spokesperson.

More details on the retirement were released in a 2 p.m. press conference Tuesday.

The press conference featured Gene Smith, the athletics director, head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Ryan Day.

Meyer shared many reasons for why he decided to retire, but focused on health.

Meyer used the press conference to formally announce his retirement from coaching. The change will happen following the team's appearance in the Rose Bowl Game.

Day was announced as the 25th head coach in the history of the program, beginning Jan. 2.

The retirement comes after a seven-year stint as the Buckeyes’ head coach starting in 2012. He leaves Ohio State with a 82-9 record (54-4 Big Ten), three Big Ten Conference championships, one undefeated season, one national title, and undefeated against Michigan.
