Road rage leads to interstate shootout

Irondale Police say at least nine bullets were found in one of the trucks involved in Thursday's interstate shootout. (

A case of road rage led to a shootout Thursday morning along Interstate 20 according to Irondale Police.

The shooting began around 7:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate, just before the I-459 overpass. It started soon after one of the two drivers cut the other off according to police who spoke to both men. Investigators believe each used a handgun in the shooting.

Both men contacted local police on Thursday and have been cooperating with investigators. They both claim the other shot first. The two men, whose names have not been released by police, are expected to be re-interviewed.It remained unclear Thursday if any criminal charges will be filed.

"I tell everybody when we're driving down the road we've got to obey the traffic laws. We've got to be smart drivers. We've got to be courteous drivers and we've got to respect people. This was ridiculous. It shouldn't have happened," said Sgt. Michael Mangina.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to call them at 205-956-5990.
