ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. — UPDATE (Friday) : Norfolk Southern announced Friday afternoon that train operations through Pell City have resumed.
The company goes on to say a total of 25 rail cars derailed.
According to the St. Clair County EMA, a train derailed at the Wolf Creek Road South railroad crossing in Pell City this morning.
There is no threat to the surrounding area, but the Wolf Creek Road South railroad crossing are blocked.
Norfolk Southern says the train was en route from Atlanta to New Orleans and consisted of 3 locomotives and roughly 70 rail cars. The company estimates 29 of the cars derailed. The cars included an estimated 7 multi-level rail cars packed with vehicles and four rail cars loaded with shipping containers. The remaining vehicles were empty.
Norfolk Southern says the cause of the derailment is under investigation and apologizes for any inconveniences caused by the incident.
No injuries were reported.
