Tuscaloosa woman targeted with unknown substance

Tuscaloosa Police are looking into an unusual situation that happened at a gas station. A group of men sprayed a woman with an unknown substance. The woman said she was caught completely off guard.. and had a bad reaction to the spray.

Adrianna Bush said she has been a customer at the Chevron on Highway 11 for five or six, and she never worried for her safety. But that changed when she said four men targeted her at the pump.

"I was pumping gas and just got this really weird feeling."

Bush said one of the men who sprayed the canned substance was wearing a mask.

"As soon as I took it in, my head felt like it was going to explode. The whole right side of my body just felt like it was burning," Bush said.

She immediately got back into her car and drove away, but the reaction to the spray continued.

"My whole right side of my face started breaking out, my chest was broken out," Bush said, "And my hand where I was holding the gas handle... everything was broken out and burning."

"It's scary," Chevron regular Maria Spencer said.

Spencer visits the gas station twice a day. She was surprised to learn what happened. The situation had both women thinking harder about watching their surroundings.

"It's very important, especially when you're by yourself. Me, I'm by myself all the time," Spencer said, "I have to look around and make sure there isn't anybody around the corner of the store."

"Definitely take your gut feeling and run with it," Bush said, "If I didn't, I don't know what would have happened."

The gas station clerk said he wants customers to know they can always find help from an employee inside if they are in trouble.

This is not the first time ABC 33/40 has reported on a story about men and women getting approached with perfume or other substances at gas stations.

Police said while warning friends and family members on social media is not a bad thing, it is absolutely necessary to call 9-1-1 and file a report.
