Two boys injured in Birmingham shooting

Birmingham officials confirm two children have been shot in Jefferson County.

Birmingham Police say two boys were injured in a shooting Monday night around 9 p.m. in the 5000 block of Sugar Ray Drive.

The children are eight and 16 years old, police confirm. The shooting occurred while the eight-year-old was playing with a gun.

Both of the boys are in stable condition at the hospital.

Police also responded to an unrelated shooting on 12th Avenue North. Two teens died as a result of that shooting.

Police say the victims were a 19-year-old male and an 18-year-old female.

This story has been corrected. Another agency had originally told ABC 33/40 that two children were fatally shot on Sugar Ray Drive. This information had been confused with a separate, unrelated shooting on 12th Avenue North.
