Two killed in collision between train and vehicle
Birmingham Police confirm that one man and one woman were killed in a collision between an Amtrak passenger train and their vehicle on Saturday evening around 6:00 PM near 17th St SW and 17th Way SW.
The collision happened when the vehicle was attempting to go around the barriers in place. The two victims were ejected from their vehicle upon impact.
Birmingham Police is investigating the incident.
The Jefferson County Coroner identified the victims as 45-year-old Lloyd Ree Orr Jr. and 35-year-old Kristi Venise Cook.
An official with Amtrak Media Relations reported the train had 37 passengers on board at the time of the incident and there were no reported injuries to customers or crew members.
The train, which originated from New York, is temporarily stopped, but will be headed for its final destination of New Orleans.
