ARLINGTON, Va (Sinclair Broadcast Group) -- The past three presidents before President Trump were weak on policies against Iran, former CIA director James Woolsey said.

When Armstrong Williams asked Woolsey why the Iranian regime had gotten away with so many atrocities until January 2020, Woolsey said Trump had enough and he took action.

The president approved a drone strike to kill Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, sparking polarizing debates and international scrutiny. Trump defended the killing, saying Soleimani was a 'bad man' and that he needed to be killed to make the world safer.

Democrats in the U.S. Senate criticized Trump for not seeking approval for the strike, and then for not defending the administration's reasoning in the briefing following the strike.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, tweeted: "There were so many important questions that the Trump administration officials did not answer in the Senate briefing on Iran. We did not see a plan—a satisfying plan—for the future. And as the questions from Senators began to get tough, they walked out."
