UAB's Brewer Hicklen taken by Kansas City in MLB Draft

Hicklen became the highest UAB player ever selected in the MLB Amateur Draft when Kansas City picked him in the 7th round

Brewer Hicklen made UAB baseball history on Tuesday--with a phone call.

The Kansas City Royals picked the Blazers outfielder in the seventh round of the MLB Amateur Draft, the highest a UAB player has ever selected.

"Goosebumps. All the way from my head to my toe. It was incredible. I can't explain it," Hicklen said.

Hicklen hit .328 with eight home runs despite playing the last half of the season with a broken bone in his right hand. Grinding through his injury reflects the toughness he brings to the baseball diamond. Hicklen's also fearless when it comes to competing for a roster spot.

"First round guys they're obviously gonna have more money invested into them," Hicklen said. "They're gonna give them more chances maybe, but at the end of the day, everybody's out there competing. Everybody's playing the same game. It's baseball."
